The Ten Commandments and Honoring Mothers

Honoring Mothers: While central to all the Ten Commandments is our responsibility toward God, the first four are dealing with our vertical relationship – toward God; and the last six are toward people – horizontal.
The order is important – loving God takes primary position in this detox program for Israel (and for those who follow). It is only as we love God that our earthly relationships will be in good shape.
That’s important when it comes to Mother’s Day…
This is a Mothers’ Day sermon, and one thing is for sure; some of you want to put your parents on a pedestal while others want to leave them stranded on a desert island.
For some of you when you think of your mother you can only think of good things (even though you know they weren’t/aren’t perfect) – you are deeply connected with you mother (or were).
For some of you when you think of your mother you can only think of pain, of domineering, of abandonment, of abuse. But even then, when no one is looking/listening, somewhere deep within you is this desire to reconnect.
The relationship with a mother (parent) goes on for a long time after you have left the nest (that’s if you have… ok for some it’s time 50yrs old)
What does it look like to honor your mother (in adulthood)?
Exodus 20:12 (ESV) 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
John 19:25-27 25 but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.
