Top ten commandments – Sabbath day rest

Sabbath day rest
I still have memories of travelling with my family in our two-toned grey and pink FC Holden sedan with its Stromberg double venturi downdraft carburetor between Devonport and Launceston and seeing a farmer in his tractor ploughing up the field, much to my father’s disdain.
It was the Lord’s Day, or Sunday. In our early years, we didn’t even shop on a Sunday and my grandmother would cook Sunday’s meals on Saturday. We certainly weren’t allowed to play sport on Sunday, but we could play cricket in driveway.
Is that what was meant by God rested on the seventh day?
Exodus 20:8-11 (ESV) 8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Our whole idea of the week is grounded in the creation account. Genesis 2:2, “And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.”
Then in the ten commandments, the Decalogue, the link is made with the Sabbath and a day of rest (Exo 20:8-11)
But what does the Sabbath day rest mean for the 21st Century believer? Is there a day that we are to keep holy that is linked to the creation order?
