Luke 24:25-27 25 Then Jesus asked the two disciples, “Why can’t you understand? How can you be so slow to believe all that the prophets said? 26 Didn’t you know that the Messiah would have to suffer before he was given his glory?” 27 Jesus then explained everything written about himself in the Scriptures, beginning with the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets.
Bones. If these bones could speak. Jurassic world dominion is the fifth sequel in the Jurassic Park franchise that started back in 1993. Once again there are genetically engineered dinosaurs wondering the planet creating havoc and someone needs to save the world, again.
I’m still waiting to read in the credits somewhere “no dinosaur was injured in the filming of this move.” Wouldn’t that be great.
Joshua ben Sira, was a Hellenistic Jewish scribe, sage, and around the Second Temple period born 190 BC. He is the author of the extra biblical text Sirach also known as the “Book of Ecclesiasticus” (not to be confused with the book of Ecclesiastes).
In this text he celebrated the fame of Israel’s past heroes. His words concerning the Twelve Prophets indicate not only their greatness in bygone years, but also their potential contribution to the future:
May the bones of the twelve prophets
also send forth new life from the ground where they lie!
For they put new heart into Jacob [Israel],
and rescued the people by their confident hope.
So it is with this sense of hope and expectation that we revive the old bones of the twelve prophets – better known as the Minor Prophets – a distinction going back to the time of St. Augustine in his treatise, The City of God.
They were not minor in any sense of their significance but only to the length of books compared with what are referred to as the Major prophets …
