Top 10 Commandments – You Will Not Murder

If ever there were to be a commandment that we could skip over…if ever there was one in the list that we’d be tempted to think didn’t speak into our lives in Victor Harbor in the 21st C…it would be this week’s commandment.

Exodus 20:13 “You will not murder.”

Most people would have known that this was one of the commandments. And even if they didn’t, it’s almost certain that most would agree that this is a good pattern of life to follow.

Whether you’re a follower of Jesus or not, we all agree, certainly in our society, that murder is not a good thing. You just have to look at the devastation high profile murders cause to a whole community like the death of Phil Walsh just over a year ago, or the shootings that seem to be happening all to often in America and that we’ve just heard of this week in the news, or the horrific things we read in the papers of what is happening in the Middle East.

And so the trouble with this commandment is not only are we so familiar with it, for so many of us it just doesn’t apply to us. We read this commandment and we’re the reality is we’re just not in any danger of breaking it, in fact more than that, we wonder how anyone could.

But what if we were to slow down & reflect on what this commandment reveals to us about the one who gives it? God is staking out his claim over life in this commandment. Jesus too takes this commandment and cuts to the heart of the issue in the sermon on the mount.

Join us this week as we look to the scriptures seeking to be transformed into the image of Christ.
