1 Ephesians – Introduction – God’s new community

I have friends that fly drones, and their photography is stunning. Particularly useful in surf photography where once the photographer had to be in the water (with a limited view) or on the land with a very large lens – and once again, only able to take an image from one perspective.

A drone can go above, alongside, in front or behind the surfer.

So it is with the book of Ephesians – it isn’t the longest (only six chapters) but the reader is left with a bird’s eye (drone) of the Christian landscape.

One theme after another: Sovereignty of God, election, the world, salvation, Jesus, the church, ethics, marriage, prayer, spiritual gifts, family, the church in the marketplace, and spiritual warfare.

Having worked our way through Romans last year, Ephesians – written by Paul while he was in prison in Rome – is a great segue into a new angle on the way Paul’s thinking has come together.

Ephesians been described “The crown and climax of Pauline theology”

“The Queen of the Epistles” “The Alps of the New Testament” “This is perhaps the profoundest book in existence.” John Calvin’s favourite letter.

Martyn Lloyd Jones – described Ephesians as “the most majestic expression of the gospel”

Consider – who wrote it; who received it; and why (it’s message)

Ephesians 1:1–2 (NLT) 1 This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. I am writing to God’s holy people in Ephesus, who are faithful followers of Christ Jesus. 2 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
