You Shall Not Give False Testimony

You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour.

When it came to settling disputes for the people of God, when it came to settling lawsuits and when it came to justice being done, the people of Israel were called to be set apart from the nations, to be marked out by their truth, to see justice done without corruption or falsehood for personal gain because of who their God is. And he is, the one who is by his very nature, true.

Jesus says to us today in Matthew 15:17-20

17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

There’s the familiar saying goes, “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” And this is a nice saying, but what is suggests is that words are meaningless, they make no difference and they hold no power… but in reality nothing could be further from the truth.

Jesus might say, “sticks and stones may break your bones, but words reveal what’s in your heart, and this is of deep significance and this matters to God!”
